Genuine VELCRO® Brand Self-Adhesive Coins and Dots

VELCRO® Brand self-adhesive coins provide a compact, reusable fastening point for suitable smooth surfaces. Each circular fastener has an adhesive backing for attaching it to a surface, while the hook and loop faces press together to create a closure that can be opened and refastened.

The terms “coins” and “dots” describe the same circular product shape. Buyers commonly search for sticky dots, sticky-back coins, self-adhesive hook and loop dots and round fastening pads, so this department covers each of those descriptions.

The range includes black and white coins in several diameters, with options for matching pairs, hook only and loop only. For longer fastening areas, browse our VELCRO® Brand self-adhesive hook and loop tape. You can also view the complete VELCRO® Brand products range.

    Choose the Correct Self-Adhesive Coins

    13 mm Self-Adhesive Coins

Compact 13 mm coins are useful where the fixing point needs to remain small and discreet. They are suitable for lightweight labels, cards, classroom resources, craft components, small displays and everyday organisation on compatible surfaces.

Choose white 13 mm self-adhesive coins for lighter backgrounds or black 13 mm self-adhesive coins for darker surfaces and equipment.

The smaller diameter provides less fastening and adhesive area than a larger coin. Do not assume that several small dots will always perform like one larger fastener, particularly where the load is uneven or the surface is flexible.

    22 mm Self-Adhesive Coins

Larger 22 mm coins provide a broader contact area for general mounting, display, packaging, point-of-sale and manufacturing applications. They are available in black and white.

Product options may supply hook coins only, loop coins only or matching quantities of both components. Select separate components when the mating surface is already fitted or when different quantities of hook and loop are required.

45 mm Heavy Duty Self-Adhesive Coins

The 45 mm Heavy Duty range provides a substantially larger adhesive and fastening area. Choose black Heavy Duty coins or white Heavy Duty coins.

Heavy Duty coins should be selected according to their exact documented rating, surface requirements and operating environment. The words “Heavy Duty” do not make every surface or mounting arrangement suitable for the same weight.

Holding performance depends on surface preparation, adhesive contact, engagement area, load direction, temperature and the condition of both surfaces. For valuable, fragile or safety-critical items, use a properly engineered mechanical fixing rather than relying solely on adhesive coins.

Hook Only, Loop Only or Matching Pairs?

    • Hook coins: the firmer component containing the small hooks.
    • Loop coins: the softer component into which the hooks engage.
    • Matching pairs: equal quantities of hook and loop coins for creating complete fastening points.

A pack of 100 matching pairs normally requires 100 hook coins and 100 loop coins. It should not be described ambiguously as “100 pieces” if the buyer actually receives 200 individual components. State both the component quantity and the number of complete fastening pairs.

Hook-only and loop-only products are useful for replacement, trade production and applications where one component is already installed. Neither component forms a complete hook-and-loop closure by itself.

Common Uses for Hook and Loop Dots

    • Classroom displays, visual timetables and learning boards
    • Posters, cards and lightweight display materials
    • Storage labels and removable container identification
    • Craft, model-making and hobby projects
    • Point-of-sale and exhibition displays
    • Office and home organisation
    • Packaging samples and presentation folders
    • Removable signs, instructions and information cards
    • Attaching lightweight accessories to suitable equipment
    • Trade assembly and small-batch manufacturing

These are general examples rather than guaranteed applications. Confirm that the exact adhesive is compatible with both surfaces and that the chosen size is suitable for the item, load and environment.

Choosing the Correct Size and Colour

Choose a diameter that fits completely within the available mounting area. Larger coins provide more potential adhesive and hook-and-loop contact, but diameter alone does not establish a safe working load.

    • 13 mm: compact fastening points for small, lightweight items.
    • 22 mm: general-purpose fastening with a broader contact area.
    • 45 mm Heavy Duty: larger mounting points where the verified Heavy Duty specification is required.

Black coins are generally less noticeable against dark equipment, boards and packaging. White coins can blend more naturally with white, pale or printed display materials. Colour does not normally determine performance unless the individual product specification states otherwise.

    Surface Compatibility

Standard VELCRO® Brand Stick On Coins are intended primarily for clean, smooth indoor surfaces. Suitable examples may include glass, metal, sealed wood and compatible rigid plastics.

Performance can be poor on rough, dusty, damp, porous, oily or weak surfaces. Adhesive may also damage delicate paint, wallpaper, paper coatings or unstable finishes when removed. Test an inconspicuous area before applying coins to a finished or valuable surface.

Do not use ordinary self-adhesive coins on fabric simply because the fabric feels smooth. Movement, fibres and washing can weaken the adhesive bond. For suitable textiles, choose VELCRO® Brand sew-on hook and loop tape or a product specifically designed for fabric.

    How to Apply Self-Adhesive Coins

    1. Check that the product and adhesive are suitable for both surfaces.
    2. Clean away dust, grease, moisture and loose material.
    3. Allow both surfaces to dry completely.
    4. Mark the required position before removing the protective backing.
    5. Peel away the backing without touching the adhesive unnecessarily.
    6. Position each coin carefully and press firmly across its complete surface.
    7. Allow the adhesive to develop its bond for the period stated in the product instructions.
    8. Align and press the hook and loop components together.
    9. Test the fastening gradually before placing the item into normal use.

Once the adhesive has bonded, remove the item by peeling the hook-and-loop faces apart. Do not repeatedly pull the complete coin away from the mounting surface, as this places unnecessary stress on the adhesive bond.

Reusable Fastener Does Not Mean Reusable Adhesive

The hook-and-loop faces can be opened and closed repeatedly. The pressure-sensitive adhesive used to attach each coin to its surface is not necessarily repositionable or reusable after removal.

If a coin is pulled away from its mounting surface, the adhesive may stretch, collect contamination or lose contact strength. Fit a new coin rather than reusing a damaged or contaminated adhesive pad.

Indoor, Outdoor and Heavy Duty Products

Do not describe the entire department as weatherproof or suitable outdoors. Standard Stick On Coins are intended for lightweight indoor organisation and display tasks. Outdoor suitability applies only where the exact Heavy Duty product specification confirms resistance to the expected moisture, temperature and environmental exposure.

Even where an adhesive is described as water-resistant, the underlying surface, hook-and-loop material and mounted item must also be suitable for the environment. Water-resistant does not mean suitable for continuous immersion.

    Important Safety Information

Self-adhesive coins should not be used for lifting, overhead suspension, fall protection or mounting objects where unexpected release could cause injury or serious damage. Do not use them as substitutes for certified electrical, automotive, structural or vehicle load-restraint fixings.

Avoid positioning fragile or valuable items where failure could cause them to fall. Inspect the coins periodically where they are exposed to repeated opening, vibration, temperature changes or contamination.

    Coins, Tape or ONE-WRAP® Fasteners?

Choose self-adhesive coins when separate, compact fastening points are required. Choose self-adhesive hook and loop tape when a longer continuous fastening area is more appropriate.

For bundling cables or items without attaching adhesive to a surface, choose VELCRO® Brand ONE-WRAP® tape or reusable cable ties. For a stitched textile closure, use VELCRO® Brand sew-on tape.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are coins and dots the same product?

Yes. Both terms are commonly used for small, circular hook and loop fasteners. VELCRO® Brand commonly describes this product format as Stick On Coins.

Do the coins include both hook and loop?

Not always. Some variations contain matching hook-and-loop pairs, while others supply hook only or loop only. Check the selected option and stated pack contents before ordering.

Can hook-only coins be used by themselves?

No. Hook-only coins require compatible loop coins to form a hook-and-loop fastening. The same applies to loop-only products.

Which coin size should I choose?

Choose 13 mm for smaller lightweight applications, 22 mm when a broader general-purpose fastening area is required, and 45 mm Heavy Duty coins only where their exact specification suits the intended mounting task.

    Can self-adhesive coins be repositioned?

The hook-and-loop fastening can be opened and refastened, but the adhesive backing is not necessarily repositionable after it has bonded to a surface.

How long should the adhesive be left before use?

Follow the instructions for the exact product. VELCRO® Brand guidance for many adhesive-backed organising products recommends allowing up to 24 hours for maximum adhesive strength.

Can the coins be used on painted walls?

They may bond to suitable smooth painted surfaces, but removal can mark or lift weak, delicate or recently applied paint. Test an inconspicuous area first.

Can the coins be used on fabric?

Ordinary self-adhesive coins are not a substitute for sew-on fasteners. Use a fabric-specific adhesive product or sew-on hook and loop tape for suitable textiles.

Are all VELCRO® Brand coins suitable outdoors?

No. Standard Stick On Coins are primarily intended for indoor use. Check the exact Heavy Duty product specification before using coins outdoors.

How much weight will a coin hold?

There is no universal department-wide rating. Performance depends on the exact product, coin size, adhesive, surface, load direction, preparation and operating conditions. Use only a rating verified for the selected product.
